Kanpo belonged to a school of Japanese painters who drew objects in a true-to-life way, similar to European artists. In 1897 he published a six volume, woodblock-printed picture book entitled MÅhitsu Etehon (i.e., Practice Book of Brush Painting) for art students who wished to learn his style of art.
