Kanpo belonged to a school of Japanese painters who drew objects in a true-to-life way, similar to European artists. In 1897 he published a six volume, woodblock-printed picture book entitled Mōhitsu Etehon (i.e., Practice Book of Brush Painting) for art students who wished to learn his style of art. Volume five included the twelve pictures of flowers and birds shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. To see flower-bird pictures from all six volumes click here.
